Nevertheless at least some of the multistory mud brick apartment buildings are lived in and electrical wiring is strung along the street. An exception is the mosque with its vestigial "pillbox" minaret, carefully maintained. Minaret and doorframe are carefully and freshly painted in green, the Islamic holy color.

  • Lavenham townscapes and architecture: Little Hall, now a museum, was a house built in the 14th century, enlarged in the 16th century, and eventually housed several families.  Restored in the 1920s by the Gayer-Anderson twin brothers, in 1975 it was given to the Suffolk Preservation Trust.  See history and program at http://www.littlehall.org.uk/littlehall/index.htm.  It is the oldest house in Lavenham.

The angel looking on is a later 18th century work by a lesser sculptor, Innocenzo Spinazzi.  The gold doors in place are replicas of the originals which are kept in the museum.

  • The ruins of a summer palace built by Abd el Rahman III in the 10th century at the height of his power for his favorite wife (concubine? mistress?) named Azahara.  Elegant and extravagant at the time, known as Medinat al Azahara, the palace was destroyed by a new wave of Berber invaders after which it became a quarry for building material.  Now being excavated and restored for presentation and education.

  • Photographer reflected in the glass exterior of the German Pavilion for the 1929 World's Fair in Barcelona, designed by Mies van der Rohe, with a sculpture by Georg Kolbe.  Torn down in 1930, after the fair, the landmark structure was reconstructed in 1983-6 by a group of Spanish architects who used the same materials as had van der Rohe.
