  • View down one of the entrance streets that leads into the ancient town and medina of Fez, Morocco. Five scattered pedestrians walk toward the camera, two away; one shopkeeper arranges his goods; one young man leans against the corner of a building in the foreground. Bright sunlight. Five satellite dishes visible on different rooftops of several ancient apartment buildings. Old and new juxtaposed in comfortable coexistence. Viewpoint slightly high so that beyond the deeply shadowed medina area at the end of the street we can see a glimpse of modern construction and blue hills beyond. Fez lies in a bowl with hills on all sides.

  • Since many museums in Florence enforce a "no foto" order, I often found more interest in peoples' interactions with sculptures in the street. Here, a "living statue," swathed in white fabric, stands in a spot near the Piazza della Signoria where there are real, not living, statues beside and behind him.

  • View down a medieval street in Trogir, Croatia. Trogir is the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex not only in the Adriatic, but in all of Central Europe. Trogir's medieval core, surrounded by walls, comprises a preserved castle and tower and a series of dwellings and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. (Wikipedia) Though no people are present, there is nevertheless a sense that these ancient dwellings are still kept up and lived in.

  • Through the display window of the gallery of Monika Spruth and Philomene Magers, London, during a show of new photos by Cindy Sherman, whose figure is seen in over life size enlargement on the walls. They are so placed in a black-and-white background landscape that the three standing figures, each in a different costume, seem to float. I have admired Sherman's work and went specifically to look at this show. It was to me more like a performance than an exhibition of work one might want to own. Nevertheless an interesting view at dusk. The street behind is reflected faintly in the windows too.

Restored in the 1920s by the Gayer-Anderson twin brothers, in 1975 it was given to the Suffolk Preservation Trust. See history and program at http://www.littlehall.org.uk/littlehall/index.htm. It is the oldest house in Lavenham.

  • This amusing fountain, probably 17th or even 18th century, stands on a corner in the Oltrarno near a bus stop I often used at the end of the day to get back to my b&b. Its grotesque mask always made me smile. Its mouth has a metal spout which indicates safe drinking water. The six balls on the escutcheon above are a Medici heraldic statement, six being typical of the 16th century usage.
