His figure, shown from the knees up, holds a crucifix and a gilded palm branch, & wears a gilded halo with 5 stars  Plain blue sky beyond.  The martyred saint's facial expression is mournful; he was killed and thrown from this bridge in 1393 as a result of a church-state struggle between the Kings of Bohemia and the Pope.  The statue was made by Jan Brokoff in 1683.

Here, a "living statue," swathed in white fabric, stands in a spot near the Piazza della Signoria where there are real, not living, statues beside and behind him.

Statue was made in 1964-65 as a memorial to monks who immolated themselves in protest of the war between America and Vietnam. The pagoda on the hill below it dates from 1900, erected and still used as an educational institution.  This view looks up at the head and shoulders of the statue, against a bright blue sky and white clouds.  It exudes a feeling of serenity.
