  • Sharp and shapely hills form a complicated landscape in the North Vietnam tribal region.  Most are systematically terraced for growing rice, knitted together by narrow footpaths that form bright ribbons across the scene.   The scene forms a complex curving visual geometry.

Five satellite dishes visible on different rooftops of several ancient apartment buildings.   Old and new juxtaposed in comfortable coexistence.  Viewpoint slightly high so that beyond the deeply shadowed medina area at the end of the street we can see a glimpse of modern construction and blue hills beyond.  Fez lies in a bowl with hills on all sides.

  • This amusing fountain, probably 17th or even 18th century, stands on a corner in the Oltrarno near a bus stop I often used at the end of the day to get back to my b&b.  Its grotesque mask always made me smile.  Its mouth has a metal spout which indicates safe drinking water.  The six balls on the escutcheon above are a Medici heraldic statement, six being typical of the 16th century usage.

  • View down a medieval street in Trogir, Croatia.  Trogir is the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex not only in the Adriatic, but in all of Central Europe. Trogir's medieval core, surrounded by walls, comprises a preserved castle and tower and a series of dwellings and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. (Wikipedia) Though no people are present, there is nevertheless a sense that these ancient dwellings are still kept up and lived in.

  • Lavenham townscapes and architecture: Little Hall, now a museum, was a house built in the 14th century, enlarged in the 16th century, and eventually housed several families.  Restored in the 1920s by the Gayer-Anderson twin brothers, in 1975 it was given to the Suffolk Preservation Trust.  See history and program at http://www.littlehall.org.uk/littlehall/index.htm.  It is the oldest house in Lavenham.
