This view through an elegantly arched doorway with a flat cornice looks toward Ghirlandaio's famous Adoration of the Magi. The plaque on the floor is a memorial to one of the hospital administrators.  Next to it lies my forgotten guidebook.

  • The same year, 1424, Masaccio and Masolino were painting the Brancacci Chapel in the Church of the Carmine.  As always I look for the details that show some personality.  Slightly thuggish looking Masaccio self portrait.  He died at the age of 27, rumored to have been poisoned by some competing painter.  Masolino the shorter man at left, and the jug-eared man Bruneslleschi.  The man in the foreground possibly Leon Battista Alberti.  They are in the audience of St. Peter enthroned.

The chancel window is Victorian Gothic, but the church interior has been revealed to have late 14th century wall paintings of St. John, the Virgin Mary, the Harrowing of Hell, and other subjects. This photo was made on a cloudy grey winter day, but the grass is bright green against the warm yellowish and reddish colored stone from which the church was built..

  • A Roman Catholic nun in grey habit and black veil draws a clean white altar cloth over the stone altar in the church of Sveti Mihovil in Korcula, Croatia.  The altarpiece is a mannerist painting by Domenico Maggiotto, 18th century, of the Trinity with two saints, one wearing a halo.  The nun concentrates on her task, which, even though a simple daily one, seems part of her spirituality.  No doubt she whispers a prayer as the cloth slides over the stone.
