  • Mosque caretaker sweeping the floor seems to be sweeping the sunlight projected from windows on the exterior wall.    Their Islamic piercing pattern also projects onto the mosque pillars.  BAround and behind the sweeper, the pointed arches recede, also illuminated by sunlight.   This is a rare image of the mosque interior.

  • Muscat, Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos, view down an arcade that borders the courtyard of the mosque.  Sunlight streaming between the pillars, casting parallel shadows.  Carved woodehn [teak] ceiling, pointed arch at entrance.

  • Friday mosque, Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.  Mughal ornament in a provincial style locally known as Indo-Saracenic.  Tomb in the center of the precinct, arcaded enclosure wall beyond.

  • Seen from the back, a neat row of 11 men with one more leader in front of them is seated on their heels in the course of doing their prayers.  The qibla and wall in front of them is elaborately inlaid with multicolored marble discernible despite the monochromatic image.  The mosque dates from 1415-1422.

  • In the mosque doorway, 5 pairs of shoes scattered anyhow just outside.  A tattered straw carpet in front, a tile floor beyond made of black and white tiles in a checkered pattern.  The disorder of the shoes and the orderliness of the tiles form a striking contrast.

  • Oman, mud brick village of Al Hamra, largely abandoned.  Though some structures still endure, no restoration seems to be attempted.  An exception is the mosque with its vestigial "pillbox" minaret, carefully maintained. Minaret and doorframe are carefully and freshly painted in green, the Islamic holy color.

  • Courtyard of Al Azhar mosque, Cairo, seat of Al Azhar University.  Al Azhar was founded 970 AD as a theological college.  Today it includes faculties of agriculture, medicine, and law. This image was made in 1979.  The huge courtyard is empty except for a student seated bent over in study under the arcade.

  • Oman, ruins of the city of Qalhat.  Only the mosque of Bibi Maryam remains, built in the 13th century when Qalhat was a wealthy trading port, visited by Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta.  Earthquake levelled it in 14th century.  Single figure of a man in the doorway and outside the small, symmetrical structure. Wearing an orange dishdasha, he holds a point-and-shoot digital camera.  Ocean horizon and bright blue sky beyond.
