  • Agra, Red Fort, sheesh mahal [glass palace] wall decoration of white plaster studded with glass and mirror chips, an exhample of Mughal architectural ornament.  Its purpose was to reflect light from outside into the interior of a room, or from a candle at night.

  • Looking upward toward the golden Buddha at the top of the Wat Arun central "prang" or pyramidal tower.  Plain stairway dominates, while the walls on either side are decorated with bits of ceramic, figures, flowers, and borders of intricate design.  A golden figure of the Buddha seated on three elephants is at the top.  Construction began in 1809, using rubble brought on ships as ballast.

The subject is the life of John the Baptist, 1485-1490,  seen from the northern side of the nave.  Altar with wooden crucifix, decorated with pots of red poinsettias and candelabra as it is still the Christmas season.

  • Three young women offer incense in a temple at the Champa site of Po Nagar.  The atmosphere shows clouds of burning incense.  The statue on the altar, presumably Po Nagar herself,  to whom they make their offerings, resembles and may also be the Vietnamese Goddess of Mercy, or Quan Am.  The statue is elaborately dressed and decorated, as is the altar.

  • Yet another town house residence is the Casa Buonarotti, where the great Michelangelo's descendants maintained a home and a collection not only of his works but of other important artists.  The third floor consists of the residential area, a series of charming small rooms, decorated in 17th and 18th century style.   This charming dome drew my attention as a dome-collector, and the guard was willing to look the other way when I asked to make a picture, as long as I used no flash.  It has a delightful Rococo frivolity balanced with a severe geometric container.
