  • Looking up toward the dome of a small Greek Orthodox church in Ayvalik, Turkey, abandoned after the Greek-Turkish population exchange in 1923. A priest from Lesbos comes over occasionally to offer a service here. Since the early Gothic period in France, the holy spirit has been envisioned as being carried on light. Here my deliberate manipulation of the high contrast of the image is means to illustrate this concept.

The nun concentrates on her task, which, even though a simple daily one, seems part of her spirituality. No doubt she whispers a prayer as the cloth slides over the stone.
