The grey edgings and  pilasters are of pietra serena, a specific type of stone from Fiesole.  Combined with the warm white walls they make an exquisitely serene space.  Some scholars now think that Berunelleschi was responsible for the design, and the building work was completed by others, such as Michelozzo.

  • In the village of Brent Eleigh, the church of St. Mary's is a perfect example of the village church.  The chancel window is Victorian Gothic, but the church interior has been revealed to have late 14th century wall paintings of St. John, the Virgin Mary, the Harrowing of Hell, and other subjects. This photo was made on a cloudy grey winter day, but the grass is bright green against the warm yellowish and reddish colored stone from which the church was built..
