  • Oman, view of the sinkhole at Ubar (also known as Shisr or Wubar).  Remains of stone built walls, with sinkhole below into which the ancient site fell. Though the Quran story describes a wealthy city which vanished, this site was most probably a walled caravanserai around a water hole.  About 30 campsites have been identified in the vicinity.   • Blank eyed theatrical mask on display in the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, Merida, Spain.  It wears a Phrygian cap, which in the western provinces of the Roman Empire came to signify freedom and the pursuit of liberty, perhaps through a confusion with the pileus, the felt cap of manumitted (emancipated) slaves of ancient Rome.

  • Portico of Octavia remains, with attached medieval church and fish market, into which a modern lighting  boutique, has been fitted.  In the doorway, a woman holding a cigarette.  The casual juxtaposition of ancient, medieval, Baroque, and contemporary buildings and uses always fascinates me.

Carved inscription in ancient South Arabian language, covered by a protective transparent plastic ( Lucite?)  shield.  Sumhuram, was an outpost of the pre-Islamic kingdom of Hadramawt on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, now in the Dhofar region of Oman.  The language of the inscription is yet untranslated.

  • View down one of the entrance streets that leads into the ancient town and medina of Fez, Morocco.  Five scattered pedestrians walk toward the camera, two away; one shopkeeper arranges his goods; one young man leans against the corner of a building in the foreground.  Bright sunlight.  Five satellite dishes visible on different rooftops of several ancient apartment buildings.   Old and new juxtaposed in comfortable coexistence.  Viewpoint slightly high so that beyond the deeply shadowed medina area at the end of the street we can see a glimpse of modern construction and blue hills beyond.  Fez lies in a bowl with hills on all sides.

An unusual example of Renaissance adaptive reuse of ancient work.   • Archaeological work entails learning from scraps of remains.   Major finds are rare.  Potsherds that have sifted to the surface can offer clues to what lies beneath.  Here, an archaeologist shows a sherd from a site currently being explored.  Its thickness indicates that it is not ancient Greek but more probably late Roman.

  • Petroglyphs at Hast bin Sultan, a wadi near Nizwa, Oman, with figures of man, woman, baby, and others, carved in low relief on a rock 20 feet high.  Unknown origin and date.  Local legend says the figures represent a father and mother who had committed infanticide, subsequently frozen into the rock as punishment.

  • On a hill near Phan Rang, South Vietnam, the Cham towers of Po Klong Garai, seen from a new parking lot lit by street lamps whose shapes echo the shape of the brick towers.  The group of small Hindu temples are still used for worship by Vietnamese Buddhists as well as Cham descendants.  They are built of brick without mortar.

  • Rome, Ara Pacis, detail of sculptured reliefs of white marble, restored.   A goddess sits amid a scene of fertility and prosperity with twins on her lap. Scholars have variously suggested that the goddess is Italia, Tellus (Earth), Venus, and Peace, though other views also circulate. Due to the widespread depiction around the sculpture of scenes of peace, and because the Altar is named "peace", the favored conclusion is that the goddess is Pax.
