Scholars have variously suggested that the goddess is Italia, Tellus (Earth), Venus, and Peace, though other views also circulate. Due to the widespread depiction around the sculpture of scenes of peace, and because the Altar is named "peace", the favored conclusion is that the goddess is Pax.

The floor is seen from a low angle to show extent and complexity of the geometric pattern.  Hexagons, triangles, circles, rectangles, squares, are set in a systematic close fitting design which I thought quite beautiful.
