Of richly painted wood, the figure holds one hand to his cheek as though with toothache, and a lantern (?) in the other.  His facial expression seems quite agonized.

  • Mozart stayed at Bertramka during his visits to Prague in 1787 and 1791. It is now a museum.  Bertramka was purchased by Franti?ek Du?ek and his wife Josefa Du?ková in 1784; Josefa was a fine singer and both were Mozart's friends.  He completed the score for Don Giovanni while staying there before its Prague premiere.  This view shows Bertramka in snow, on a January day.

Also known as the "Old-New Synagogue," the oldest in Europe.  Built 1270 in Gothic style.

It is uniquely deconstructivist in style, its flamboyant modernity successfully cohabiting with the medieval buildings on either side.  Seen from across a wet street with snow on the ground.  One man, pedestrian, in the foreground.  Several parked cars in front of the building; one black sedan waiting at the crossroads traffic light.

  • Snow on the cobbles and roofs; head on view of a cottage converted into a souvenir shop, its doors open bearing shelves for display of souvenirs for sale.  Adjoining cottage has bright blue walls.  A rhythm of square, rectangular, and round shapes makes a geometric two dimensional structure. Street in the 17th century was occupied by goldsmiths, hence its name.  Subsequently redeveloped in the time of Maria Theresa in the 18th century; in the 19th and early 20th century, squatters' housing; now occupied by expensive souvenir shops and restaurants.

  • Looking up at the bronze statue of St. John Nepomuk on the Charles Bridge, Prague.  His figure, shown from the knees up, holds a crucifix and a gilded palm branch, & wears a gilded halo with 5 stars  Plain blue sky beyond.  The martyred saint's facial expression is mournful; he was killed and thrown from this bridge in 1393 as a result of a church-state struggle between the Kings of Bohemia and the Pope.  The statue was made by Jan Brokoff in 1683.

  • Every Prague restaurant and cafe serves its particular recipe for hot spiced wine.  This is wonderful for rest and refreshment after a morning or afternoon of winter walking and sightseeing.  The image, shot at ASA 1600, exhibits a lot of color noise, which may be interpreted as a digital pointillism if you are willing to be flexible.

Side view of the tomb on its plinth; window above with 16th century frescoes of the life of King Wenceslaus.   The chapel itself is 14th century, rebuilt from the original 10th century rotunda church, after Wenceslaus had become the patron saint of Bohemia.

  • Many old buildings in Prague use the basement as a restaurant and advertise favorably their "Gothic cellar."  This is an entrance to one of them in Hradcany.  There is graffiti carved in the ancient door jamb.  Dark steps lead down from the street.
