  • Worshippers at prayer in front of the qibla of the mostque of Sultan al Muayyad, near Bab Zuweila, Cairo, Egypt.  The Imam leading the prayers stands, while seven men kneel and bow behind him.  Some, including the Imam, wear galabeyyas, while others wear trousers. They are seen from behind.  The Qibla is ornamented with a design of colored tiles.  Straw matting on the floor.

This image was made in 1979.  The huge courtyard is empty except for a student seated bent over in study under the arcade.

  • Mosque caretaker sweeping the floor seems to be sweeping the sunlight projected from windows on the exterior wall.    Their Islamic piercing pattern also projects onto the mosque pillars.  BAround and behind the sweeper, the pointed arches recede, also illuminated by sunlight.   This is a rare image of the mosque interior.

  • Though the mosque is hundreds of years old (date uncertain) it is carefully maintained and freshly painted, mainly in green.  The qibla is framed by an unusual lobed and pointed arch.

  • Oman, mud brick village of Al Hamra, largely abandoned.  Though some structures still endure, no restoration seems to be attempted.  An exception is the mosque with its vestigial "pillbox" minaret, carefully maintained. Minaret and doorframe are carefully and freshly painted in green, the Islamic holy color.
