  • Lavenham townscapes and architecture: Little Hall, now a museum, was a house built in the 14th century, enlarged in the 16th century, and eventually housed several families. Restored in the 1920s by the Gayer-Anderson twin brothers, in 1975 it was given to the Suffolk Preservation Trust. See history and program at http://www.littlehall.org.uk/littlehall/index.htm. It is the oldest house in Lavenham.

  • In the village of Brent Eleigh, the church of St. Mary's is a perfect example of the village church. The chancel window is Victorian Gothic, but the church interior has been revealed to have late 14th century wall paintings of St. John, the Virgin Mary, the Harrowing of Hell, and other subjects. For known history, see http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/brent.html. This photo was made on a cloudy grey winter day, but the grass is bright green against the warm yellowish and reddish colored stone from which the church was built..

  • The Baptistry dome interior has spectacular mosaics, still very Byzantine in style, made during the 13th century. I have not seen any attribution to any one artist, though it is said that the painter Coppo di Marcovaldo made some of the cartoons.
