Son of liberty in a Phrygian cap

Blank eyed theatrical mask on display in the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, Merida, Spain. It wears a Phrygian cap, which in the western provinces of the Roman Empire came to signify freedom and the pursuit of liberty, perhaps through a confusion with the pileus, the felt cap of manumitted (emancipated) slaves of ancient Rome.
