Painful devotion

Looking up at the bronze statue of St. John Nepomuk on the Charles Bridge, Prague. His figure, shown from the knees up, holds a crucifix and a gilded palm branch, & wears a gilded halo with 5 stars Plain blue sky beyond. The martyred saint's facial expression is mournful; he was killed and thrown from this bridge in 1393 as a result of a church-state struggle between the Kings of Bohemia and the Pope. The statue was made by Jan Brokoff in 1683.
